Discover the Story of Kentucky Down Under
In 1990, the special interests of two outgoing individuals came together to create a unique attraction in south central Kentucky. In that year, Bill and Judy Austin opened Kentucky Down Under to the public. Bill and Judy first met in New Zealand in the late 1960s. Judy, a native Australian, was working as a physical therapist on the island, while Bill, an engineer with the National Science Foundation, was preparing for an expedition to Antarctica.
In time, the two married and moved to Washington, D.C., but stayed there only a few years before deciding to return home to Horse Cave, Bill's hometown. Back home again, Bill became manager of Mammoth Onyx Cave (later renamed Kentucky Caverns), which his grandfather had purchased in the 1920s. Through the years, peafowl and other small animals had been added to the park for visitors to enjoy on the surface in between cave tours.
Bill and Judy observed how much their guests liked these animals, and this encouraged them to add others. They started by adding a herd of American bison in the 1970s, followed by the Australian animals in 1990.
"I grew up on an outback sheep station and had kangaroos for pets, so starting a business that focused on Australian animals seemed like a natural," explained Judy. Since the couple wanted to offer various facets of the Australian culture to the public, their 75-acre park has become an assortment of exhibits and programs depicting life in the "Land Down Under." At Camp Corroboree, Australia's Aboriginal culture is introduced through live demonstrations of instruments and tools, along with stories and more. Meanwhile, the continent's European settlement and pastoral beginnings are explained at the Woolshed program. Many species of parrots and other Australian birds can be viewed in the park's Exotic Bird Garden or visitors can step into a walk-in Aviary to hand-feed colorful birds found inside. In the Outback, visitors stroll through an open field among kangaroos, emus, and other wildlife, while more hands-on experiences await them in the Discovery Area. And of course, guided tours of Kentucky Caverns still continue throughout the day.
The Austins own additional acres of land surrounding the park so opportunities exist for expansion in the future. As the park grows, one key factor will always remain true—a high standard of personal customer service. The management and staff at Kentucky Down Under work together as a team to offer visitors a safe, clean park; friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous service; fun and relaxation; and an opportunity to truly experience a "piece of Australia in the heart of Kentucky." Although the Austins have since sold the property, their vision and dedication continue to shape the park, and the new ownership remains committed to preserving the unique experiences and exceptional hospitality that have made Kentucky Down Under a beloved destination for generations.

This has been our favorite stop! Our 7 year old said it was the best day of his life! Upon entering the establishment we were greeted with the nicest gentleman who was friendly and very informative. The animals and grounds are very well kept and clean. The cave tour was incredible and the guide was informative and personable. The kangaroo experience is included and super exciting for all ages! Rent the golf cart! I would recommend this to anyone on any kind of trip! Definitely a great stop!! We will be back again!!
